Winery Spotlight: Delaplane Cellars

Every time my boyfriend and I have consecutive days off in a row together, we hop in our car and head out of town, most often to Virginia Wine Country. It was on one of those trips that we discovered Delaplane Cellars, located in Delaplane, Virginia, just an hour outside of Washington, D.C. in the Middleburg AVA. It was truly one of the most striking wineries we've found, and their wine was just as spectacular as their views!

We sat in the tasting room on a quiet, sunny afternoon in September and tasted through a flight as well as a glass or two extra because the wine was just that good! Delaplane Cellars exclusively uses Virginia grown fruits, featuring a range of wines from a crisp old world style Sauvignon Blanc to an off-dry Petit Manseng to an age-worthy Bordeaux Blend.

While we enjoyed our wine, we had a chance to speak with an obviously passionate associate who honestly just made us more excited about the wine! He explained that he was beginning the transition over to the winemaking side of things and we discussed in length the growth of the Virginia wine industry, including its status as an underrated wine region of the United States. He also mentioned how excited Delaplane was to be a leader in innovation for the Virginia wine world and how the integration of Napa's winemaking practices could further improve Virginia's status. It's wonderful to see associates at wineries like this just as excited about our state's future in the industry!

So, get to it, Liana! How was the wine? It was phenomenal. We brought home more than a case of wine, and that was us really limiting ourselves! We often cook fairly light meals at the house, so we heavily focused on white wines, selecting two bottles of each, plus a Cab Franc (yum!), knowing we would enjoy pairing them with future dinners. Over the past few months, we have made some gorgeous dishes alongside these wines, including scallops, halibut, monkfish, and tuna. There are plenty more on the shelf for us to enjoy and we can't wait to get started!

If you're in the D.C. or Northern Virginia area, definitely don't hesitate to give this place a visit! With a gorgeous wine selection and friendly, knowledgeable staff, Delaplane Cellars is a must for us any time we're in the area. Cheers, y'all!
